On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
