Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
